Live Music : Adam Hammer
Jun

Live Music : Adam Hammer

Adam Hammer has a story to tell. It’s a story of fatherhood, homelessness, love, addiction, recovery, pain, comfort and unity told in front of a backdrop of his own unique style of “tattooed folk” music.

Hammer’s music is inspired by his roots in small-town Henning, Minn., (population 735) where he was born and raised and started playing guitar when he was 12. He learned in the true folk tradition picking up chords and songs from his mom, aunts and uncles.

The musical melting pot that makes up Hammer’s influences is why his sound is so unique.

“I was raised on ’60s folk revival, gospel, Hank Williams, ’80s rock and alternative music with a splash of punk rock influence. I was an outcast in my tiny town who dressed different and got in a lot of trouble,” Hammer said.

After performing in punk and heavy metal bands throughout much of the 1990s, Hammer turned his focus back to his roots in acoustic music where he has carved his place through his EP and LP releases throughout the 2000s and 2010s.

After releasing short runs of the “Figments EP” solo and “The EP” with Doug Yorgason in the acoustic group East Arm, Hammer took a few years off from recording. His second solo EP release, the “Tattooed Folk EP,” was released April 2008 and he followed that with the “From the Basement” EP in 2010, which previewed his next two projects that were released in 2011 and 2012.

In March 2012, Hammer released his first solo full-length CD “Broken Like You,” which quickly broke the top 10 on the CMJ charts at 88.1 FM KVSC in St. Cloud. For this release, Hammer put together a backing band that includes some of Minnesota’s best with Jeff Vee on drums (Bobby Vee, Jack Knife and the Sharps), Tommy Vee on bass (Bobby Vee, Brian Setzer, Rosie Flores), Kurt Rodman on lead guitar, George Maurer on piano, Nils Loewen on cello and Cofell on guitar and backing vocals.Hammer released the “Let it Burn” EP with his band the Impact on Jan. 25, 2011 featuring some of his darker, drop-tuned cuts (“Let it Burn,” “The Drive,” a new rendition of “Ballad of Lucy” and others).  The Impact included Dave Cofell on guitar and harmonica, Cody “Scribbles” Jergenson on bass and Jon Schulte on drums.

The result is an album filled with thick simple layers, poetic songwriting and a few catchy sing-a-longs. The soundscape spans from somber tones to acoustic rockabilly, a dash of twang, modern folk and blues.

Hammer is returning to his roots for his latest project, “Simple Songs.” While some demos have been floating around in different iterations since 2017, the first official single, “The Love You Take” was released in September 2019. The single was recorded live by 88.1FM KVSC at a sold-out Granite City Radio Theatre show at the Pioneer Place on Fifth in St. Cloud. It was a moment of unexpected musical magic with the Collective Unconscious house band.

Matthew was born and raised in Mankato, MN.  Bounced around for a couple of decades before settling in the Twin Cities metro area.

Music has always been a significant part of Matthew's life.  From playing a variety of instruments early on in life to today.

A friend introduced Matthew to the guitar.  It was the missing piece.

A couple of bands, a couple hundred bonfires, and a significant life event has led to this moment.

Living life by the "you only live once" motto, Matthew had to start sharing his love for music with the universe.

This journey brings you and the universe, songs of lessons learned, songs of love & compassion and songs for beautiful places.

Live Music : Jordan Messerole

From the depths of his Iowa roots, multi-award winning songwriter Jordan Messerole writes songs that vary as greatly as the wild flowers in the native tall grass. Messerole does frequently write about that flora, as well as the fauna of the region. Not to mention all of its wild life. Not one to shy away from subject matter, the songs can frequently meander across the lines between love and loss, success and failure, or life and death. Messerole masterfully blends the sounds of his guitars with thoughtful lyrics, an engaging stage presence, and often rack harmonica to tell gritty American tales that are bound to evoke emotion from all of his listeners.

Live Music: Bruce Archer

Live Music: Bruce Archer

Bruce Archer plays a rollicking combination of blues, bluegrass, country, and folk that doesn’t fit tidily into a single genre. His finger-picking and slide guitar display a level of talent and mastery that can only come from 40-plus years of sifting through musical styles and keeping the bits that resonate with him. He coaxes from his guitar an instrumental voice that is authentically his own.

Masterful finger-picking and slide guitar punctuate the highly autobiographic lyrics of his latest release, THE HALLOWED LAND. This eclectic, sometimes rollicking, sometimes reflective, genre-bending album is a paean to traditional story-telling.

There have been plenty of highs and few lows—from open mic nights in college to forming and writing for bands that regularly played high profile alt-music clubs in Uptown, Downtown and West Bank Minneapolis, to returning to solo gigs in the north woods of Minnesota.

He's enjoyed playing with some topnotch musicians and, occasionally, moved on through collabrations that just didn’t work. Archer has opened for legendary bass guitarist Ronnie Lane (Small Faces), the Uppity Blues Women, the Jayhawks, the Gear Daddies’ frontman Martin Zellar, the Phones, and Run Westy Run—to name a few.

Yet through it all, he has relied on his Iowa roots and sense of who he is. Archer brings a raw authenticity to his gigs, which are best suited to listening environments.

Live Music: Tyler Stuckey w/ Skye Robert Berns

I am Tyler Stuckey, songwriter and musician based in Austin, Texas.  I perform under my name, Tyler Stuckey because after 5 years, 7 band names, and 90% of the songs written by me, it just made sense.

For the last couple years I've been playing with my honky-tonk band. Which includes Electric Guitar, Bass and Drums. With rotating accompaniment on Fiddle, Steel Guitar, Banjo, Keyboard. We've played festivals, dive bars, campgrounds, country clubs, night clubs and living rooms. All in the name of spreading these songs.

I have a long story that includes living in tipis, RV's, my truck, a tent, Alaska, Texas, Montana, love lost, love found, alot of late nights, early mornings, building mansions and living in shacks. This probably deserves more than a line in a bio, but it's all in the songs anyway.

What I can tell you is that I have an honest addiction to music. Listening, playing and writing are on my mind from the minute I wake up till the last tune I hum to go to sleep. Because the songs are a closest thing I have to to the constant melodies in my mind. Can you hear what I hear? Dig what I dig? Feel what I feel? Hurt how I hurt? Or dance how I dance? Give it a listen and we'll both find out.

SEA SHANTY NIGHT with O'Ferfun

What shall we do with a drunken sailor? Sing about it, of course!

Join Alexandria’s own O’Ferfun for a night of song-singing and table-thumping as they present a night of sea shanties, pirate ballads, Irish tunes, and more! Singalongs are encouraged, as is dressing up for the occasion, and the band will be more than happy to teach you the words.

This event is all-ages and free to attend, and bound to be a great time!

From the band:

O’Ferfun, a Celtic music ensemble from West Central Minnesota, is based on the session bands that have performed regularly for generations in pubs throughout Ireland. Using traditional instruments like accordion, banjo, bodhran, fiddle, guitar, and penny whistle, the group are all vocalists and feature three- or four-part vocals, often a capella. Band members come from a variety of musical background, and each brings a unique take on traditional and newer music.

You can look forward to hearing a wide variety of music, from Tell Me Ma, Wild Rover, Go Lassie Go, Molly Malone, and shanties The Wellerman, Drunken Sailor, Bully in the Alley, to Sloop John B, Brown Eyed Girl, Banana Boat Song, and more. These guys aren’t afraid to try anything, and you never know what you may hear!

Live Music : Adam Hammer

Singer/songwriter Adam Hammer is something new wrapped in something unexpectedly familiar. His blend of original folk, alternative, blues and rock with a dash of alt-country pairs well with Tom Waits, The Lumineers, Roger Miller and Gordon Lightfoot.

Hammer has toured extensively throughout the Midwest and other parts of the country with his solo show and various bands over the past 20-plus years. His latest collection of soon-to-be-released songs focus on the nostalgia of growing up in small-town Minnesota and life through a simpler lens.
